Laark Productions is the combined artistic and business concept of Lane and Karla Burkitt. With multiple performance, artistic and leadership credentials and extensive experience in local educational, community and professional theater they incorporated as Laark Productions in 2013. In June 2014, under the direction of Karla Burkitt, the new company produced Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in partnership with the Highlands Center for Natural History as a fundraiser for the center's educational programming. Since that initial production Shakespeare in the Pines has grown to be an annual event taking place in the heart of Prescott National Forest each June. In 2015 Laark Productions partnered with the Highlands Center, Camp Verde Library and Arcosanti Urban Laboratory to develop new audiences and share a love of theater with neighboring Northern Arizona communities. The 2016 season launched a new relationship with Yavapai Community College in Clarkdale, AZ as the company brought Shakespeare's great tragedy, Hamlet, to their outdoor stage.
Karla Burkitt earned her BA in theater from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Her resume includes authorship of multiple plays, writing and directing scores of productions, and performances as Isabella (Measure for Measure), Titania (A Midsummer Night's Dream), Lady Macbeth (Macbeth) and Shylock (The Merchant of Venice). She worked for ten years with Arizona Classical Theater's Arizona Shakespeare Festival--six as an artistic associate--before the organization relocated to Phoenix. Karla teaches theater to grades k-8 at Franklin Phonetic School in Prescott Valley, AZ and is the Jr. High theater teacher and Sr. High theater coach at Trinity Christian School in Prescott.
